Pioneers of Organic Farming
For over 30 years, we have been implementing organic methods of farming. We strongly practice many different ways in assuring that we are safety conscious, minimally disturbing the environment and ecosystem in the vineyard and being good stewards of the land. We focus our efforts in five key elements of organic farming which include; utilizing animals for grazing, applying natural resourced soil amendments, monitoring plant health through sap analysis, practicing no-till cultivation in conjunction with cover crops, and using natural non - synthetic pesticide methods to control insects and diseases.

During the late winter months of the year, usually the vegetative cover in the vineyards are needing to be mowed down. Implementing animals to graze is a useful resource to keep costs at a minimum as well as adding animal manure to the soil surface.

Natural soil amendments are also applied during the growing season. Depending on the soil health, soil biology and soil chemistry, the applications of fungal based compost, and compost teas along with Gypsum or Limestone soil amendments are applied.

Monitoring the plant health during the various growth stages is very important. Both the youngest and most mature leaves are collected and pressed. The liquid sap extract helps determine whether or not the plant is extracting and utilizing a balance of nutrients throughout the plant. A refractometer is a tool we use to look at the brix (sugar) levels of the plant. The higher the brix levels in the sap extract, disease and insect pest pressure are noticeably reduced.
Minimizing soil disturbance is key in assuring that the soil food web is fully functioning efficiently. Practicing methods of mowing throughout the growing season allows for this to occur. Cultivation practices are only used in preparation of covercrop seedbeds or leveling out ground surfaces.

Allowing the natural vegetative cover and cover crop species to thrive with minimal disturbance, enhances the population of predatory insects. Species of ladybugs, butterflies, lace wings and wasps can found in the canopy. This growing environment keeps control of unwanted insects such as mites and leafhoppers.
